According to the data of the World Health Organization (WHO), there are obese individuals over 400 million and overweight individuals more than 1.6 billion; these figures are expected to reach 700 million and 2.3 billion respectively in the year 2015.

What is morbid obesity?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is taken as the basis for obesity. BMI is the value found by dividing the body weight (kg) by the square of height (m) (BMI=kg/m2). BMI is an indication assessing the weight from the perspective of height, and does not give information about the fat distribution in the body. In the recent years that fight against obesity have spread, measuring the waistline only have started to be used commonly for the risk identification. The waistline-only measurement exceeding 94cm in men and 80cm in women causes the increase of risk for diseases.

What is laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (R-YGB) operation?

An important option in patients that diet and exercise are insufficient is the Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (R-YGB) surgery. In the first step, volume of the stomach is reduced to a volume of about 30-50 cc to ensure the feeling of fullness with smaller portions. In the second step, early contact of a portion of the small intestines is eliminated and absorption is partially reduced to ensure the excretion of the high-calorie foods taken in by the patients.

Effective and controlled weight loss is ensured

This effect shows itself mostly within the first one year. The cardiovascular diseases, type II diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, and similar metabolic disorders that obesity is indicated as the cause can clinically improve after this treatment or can be controlled more easily. In addition, laparoscopic application of this method ensures the elimination mostly of problems related to the surgical wounds of the traditional operation methods, herniation in the incision sites and postoperative pain.
Since this operation has restrictive effect on the absorption, vitamin and mineral deficiencies are expected. Lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation must be taken.
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass surgery can be reversed if required; however, you must discuss all the risks with your doctor face to face before deciding for the operation.

It provides great comfort for the patient

Patients that operation is planned for are evaluated in detail by the team of doctors involved in the obesity treatments in the preoperative period. This evaluation is made on all the patients by endocrinology and psychiatry specialist by all means. If required, thoracic diseases and cardiology departments are also consulted with according to the metabolic conditions and status of the patient. There are many obesity surgery techniques possible with the laparoscopic method. Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass surgery is the technique recommended as the most effective treatment particularly in the United States of America. It is recommended gradually for more patients in Europe together with Turkey. After making 4-6 incisions in the abdomen of the patients, all of which are 1cm long, and cameras and instruments are placed in. About ninety-five percent of the stomach is bypassed and a portion in the size of an egg is left functional. Follow-up in the hospital is required for 4 to 6 days postoperatively. Your feeding will be planned by a dietician for the period till the first control visit. For the first one year, you will be closely followed up by the endocrinologist, psychiatrist and dietician together with your obesity surgeon. These follow-ups are required for you to adapt yourself to your new physiology and to learn to use it in correct way.
