WHAT’S ANGIOPLASTY? 

Deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol,calcium and other substances can build up in the inner lining of an artery, which is called plaque . If the plaque gets big enough, it prevents blood flow and tissue  ischemia occurs. Should the incident occurs in the coronary(heart) artery, it will lead to myocardial ischemia and sometimes myocardial necrosis.  Coronary angioplasty is a procedure used to open blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. The procedure improves blood flow to the heart muscle and relives myocardial ischemia.  In the procedure of angioplasty a small baloon inflated in blocked or narrowed artery region and usually the procedure is finished with implantation of a stent which is a mesh-like tube, often made of metal .

WHO’S A CANDIDATE FOR ANGIOPLASTY?

Angioplasty is a common medical procedure. Patients with angina, breath shortness or myocardial ischemia which is shown by objective tests and patients who have significant coronary artery narrowing are good candidates for coronary angipoplasty.

Primary angioplasty is a life saving emergency procedure for patients with an on-going acute heart attack.

Angioplasty is one the most frequently performed procedures because of it’s role both as a preventive and life saving procedure.
