In general, mitral valve disease arises as related to several causes. Treatment is either replacement or repair of the valve. However, the mitral insufficiency resulting from the coronary artery disease is rather different from other mitral valve diseases outside some exceptional cases. In these cases, there are no structural problems in the valve; however, as a result of some anatomic changes, the function of the valve ensuring one way passage through the valve deteriorates. In this stage, the repair procedure we call the “annuloplasty” will ensure the satisfactory operation of the mitral valve within the enlarged heart. In some applications, replacing the insufficient valve with prosthesis is preferred. This method, which is inevitable particularly in the elderly with structural problems of the valve, brings forth some other problems like the increased operative risk, removal of the mitral valve causes negative impacts to the the left ventricule which already has important functional problems, and lifelong requirement of using anticoagulants if the prosthesis used is a mechanic one.
“Therefore, replacement of the valve should not be preferred unless absolutely required, and maintaining and repairing the original valve must be attempted even a little time-consuming for the surgeon” says Prof.Dr.Kaya Suzer
Patients who were not satisfactorily evaluated in the initial operation, or who were not operated satisfactorily according to the need of the patient or those who did not receive the pre- and postoperative care according to the quality standards may have to continue their lives with problems that have become chronic. Therefore, investments on qualified human force and quality of service against these increased numbers are critical factors on the quality of life and survival.
